SIGHT WORD BLACKOUT
Objective: Teachers to supplement phonics instruction with sight words to increase a students familiarity with high frequency words
Materials: cardstock, poster boards, 30pre-made game boards, 1 blank game board for teacher, bingo chips, transparent counters, math cubes, or dry erase marker if the boards are laminated, choose words from Dolch high frequency words or Fry's sight words to make the words cards that will be used in the game. Teachers can use their discretion to replace these words with their own.
Activity/Procedure: Every student that wishes to play will get a sight words board. The teacher will shuffle the cards and combine all words being used into a face down pile. Students can take turns reading a word from the pile of cards and everyone will look for that work on their card. If the student finds the word they should cover the word with a marker or bingo chip. Note every student board will not contain all the words being used the student will have to find the word being called. The first student to cover their entire board has (Blackout) and wins the game.
Differentiate Options: This activity can be modified to use words from a previously taught lesson, or book, or words already previously known or even to introduce new words. This game has flexibility to be generally fun or time
Assessment Options: Observe whether students are having a difficult time reading or pronouncing the sight words. If so the teacher should take 20 seconds to have those students look at the word. The teacher should say the correct word and have the student repeat the word up to 6 times.
Age Span: Pre-K- 2nd grade
Justification of Choice: I love that read aloud sight words introduce vocabulary and help the students to read more fluently as well as strengthen their comprehension for what they are reading

SIGHT WORD FISHING
Objective: Using this activity students will have the opportunity to practice sight words and improve their retention of high frequency words
Materials: Fish shaped flash cards or cutouts preprinted on cardstock, poster board, or index cards. Fishing rod (thin piece of rod/wood/dowel), string or yarn, magnet, scissors.
Activity/Procedure: Tie one end of the string to the magnet and the other end of the string to the stick or rod. To stop the string from sliding tie a knot around one end of the stick. On the heads of each fish cutout place a staple or paper clip. Place all the fish word side down on the table or the desk. The student catches a fish by dangle the rod with the magnet near the fish head, that the fish off the end of the rod read the word on the back of the fish in order to keep the catch. If the student get the word incorrect the teacher provides the student with the correct word and return the fish to the pond to be caught later in the game. When students catch all the words the game is over.
Differentiate Options: Teachers can modify this game using a combination of grade level appropriate sight word or some easier or more difficult word. Variations of the game can be played by using the activity as a contest for students allowing them to keep all the fish that they can read in 3 minutes
Assessment Options: Teacher can keep track of the words that the students got correct and the words that they are struggling with. The game activity is a way of doing an assessment of progress.
